Dearest Last born

On May 2, 1926, my parents got married, a condition in which they remained for over sixty-seven years. For the last fifteen of those years, they spent six monts a year arguing in Florida and six months a year arguing in New York. During the Florida Phase, my mother loved for me to write to her, but because of my busy travel and lecture schedule, i'm rarely in a position to do that, since it's impossible to write and drive at the same time. therefore, i usually call her on the phone. this is the response to one of my phone calls:

Dearest Sweetheart,

It was a pleasure hearing your voice, but your letters give me a bigger thrill, because i read and re-read them. i'm looking forward to seeing you and the kids. how are they doing in school and at home? The movie sounded interesting. Where did you eat? We love you very much. Kiss the kids for us.

Just Dad and Me

Now I ask you, is that a humble person? "Just Dad and Me." That's like getting eviction notice signed "Just the Landlord."

In any event, how could i deprive my wonderful mother of a letter for her to read and reread? so i wrote her a letter, and here is her response:

Dearest Last born,

It's really a marvelous thing for a daughter to get a minute's time to write after a two month vacation. I can't understand what you are doing at the senior citizen's. What do you teach them? At this stage of life, I would think you could take lessons from them! I'm glad you had that article to send me, otherwise I don't think i would even have gotten the letter yet. Anyway, I love you and I'm happy to hear that you are enjoying life. Please, please continue! Give my kids a big hug and kiss for me.

Well, now i decided i could write her a long letter, which i did. i called to tell her i hadjust sent her the longest leter i hadever written, and she was never going to complain again. Right? Wrong! Here is the answer to my longest letter:

Dear Joyce,

Yes, your letter was a nice long one. but a letter is a letter, and you only used one stamp, so that means it is only one letter. Come on kid, you will have to write again, and soon. Trying to get you on the phone is a great big joke. Do you ever get off? I have tried a half dozen times and the line was busy,and the other time i got the machine. Forget it. You call me. I will give you back whatever the cost is.

And now for la piece de resistance. i was looking for a long hooded fur jacket to keep me warm, because my lectures take me to some of the coldest parts of the country in the dead of winter. I searched for a jacket, checking all the furrier in Hartford and New Haven, but i couldn't afford anything they had. Finally, in desperation, i thought of the old family furrier. i called my mother in Florida and said, "Mom, is Mr. Walowitz in Brooklyn still in business?" and she said, "of course he's still in business. in fact his son is in the business with him, and his grandson is twenty-three already, and he's in the business too. You call him and i'm sure he'll make something for you in your price range." when i told my mom i had ordered a jacket from him, this is what she wrote:

Dear Doll,

I think you are doing the right thing by going to Walowitz. i have always been very happy with everything he ever did for me. but tell him he should give you the cost of your trips to Brooklyn, and also don't pay taxes. TELL HIM I SAID SO. Explain to Walowitz that ut costs you $25 each time you come Brooklyn, and also tell him you are not going to charge him for the time it takes you. I am not joking. He should do something for you. remind him that he didn't give you a wedding gift!

Recently, at the conclusion of my lectures on the importance of humor, a nice Chinese man came over to me and said, "Joyce, i want you to know that having heard your mother's letters, o now know there is a universality in mothers. i also realize my mother must be Jewish!"

Artinya :

Pada tanggal 2 Mei 1926, orang tua ku menikah, suatu kondisi dimana mereka tetap bersama selama lebih dari enam puluh tujuh tahun. Dalam lima belas tahun terakhir, mereka menghabiskan enam bulan dalam setahunnya untuk berdebat di kota Florida dan enam bulan dalam setahun berikutnya di kota New York. Pada fase di Florida, ibu ku sangat suka aku menulis surat untuknya, tetapi karena perjalanan dan jadwal kuliah ku yang sangat sibuk, aku jarang berada didalam posisi untuk menulis surat, karena tidak mungkin untuk menulis dan mengemudi pada waktu yang sama. Oleh karena itu, aku biasanya menelepon. Berikut ini adalah respon ibu ku terhadap salah satu panggilan telepon ku:

Kepada yang tersayang,

Merupakan suatu hal yang menyenang dapat mendengar suara mu, tetapi surat-surat mu memberikan sensasi yang jauh lebih besar, karena aku dapat membaca nya berulang-ulang. Aku tidak sabar untuk melihatmu dan anak-anak. Bagaimana mereka di sekolah dan dirumah? Film nya kedengarannya menarik. Dimana kamu makan? kami sangat mencintaimu. Cium anak-anak untuk kami.

Sekarang, aku bertanya kepada mu, apakah itu jawaban dari orang yang rendah hati? "Cuma Ayah dan Aku." Itu terdengar seperti pemberitahuan penggusuran yang ditandatangani oleh "Cuma Tuan Tanah." Dalam peristiwa apapun itu, bagaimana bisa aku merampas surat indah untuk ia baca berulangulang? Jadi aku kembali menulis surat untuknya, dan berikut ini adalah tanggapannya:

Merupakan suatu hal yang sangat luar biasa bagi seorang anak perempuan untuk menyisihkan satu menit dari waktunya setelah liburan selama dua bulan untuk menulis surat kepada orangtuanya. Aku tidak mengerti apa yang kamu lakukan pada orang lanjut usia. Apa yang kamu ajarkan kepada mereka? Pada tahap kehidupan ini, aku berpikir kamu bisa mengambil beberapa pelajaran dari mereka! Aku senang bahwa kamu telah mengirim beberapa artikel untuk ku, kalau tidak aku pasti berpikir bahwa surat belum juga sampai padaku.  Pokoknya, aky mencintaimu dan aky senang mendengar bahwa kamu menikmati hidupmu. Silahkan, silahkan lanjutkan! Berikan anak-ana pelukan dan ciuman dari kami.

Baiklah, sekarang aku memutuskan untuk menulis surat yang panjang untuknya. Aku menelepon untuk memberitahunya bahwa aku baru saja mengirim surat terpanjang yang pernah aku tulis dan dia tidak akan mengeluh lagi. Benarkan? Salah! Berikut ini adalah jawaban untuk surat terpanjang aku untuknya.

Iya. suratmu sangat bagus dan panjang. Tetapi sebuah surat hanyalah surat, dan kamu hanya mengunakan satu buah perangko, jadi itu berarti hanya satu surat. Ayolah nak, kamu harus menulisnya lagi and dengan segera. Mencoba mencapaimu di telepon adalah sebuah lelucon besar. Apa kamu pernah menutup telepon? Aku sudah setengah lusin mencoba meneleponmu dan salurannya selalu sibuk and pada waktu lainnya aku dijawab oleh mesin penerima. Sudah lupakan, kamu yang menelepon aku. Aku akan mengembalikan berapapun biayanya.

Dan sekarang, sebagai upaya terakhir perlawanan. Aku sedang mencari jaket bulu dengan tudung yang panjang untuk tetap hangat, karena perkuliahan terkadang membuat aku ke beberapa derah terdingin dari musim dining di negeri ini. Aku mencari jaket, memeriksa semua pegadang jaket bulu di Hartford dan New Haven., tetapi saya tidak mampu membeli apa yang mereka jual. akhirnya, dengan putus asa saya berpikir jaket bulu tua yanga da di keluarga. Aku menelepon ibu di Florida dan berkata " Ibu, apakah Mr. Walowitz di Brooklyn masih berbisnis?" dan dia berkata, "Tentu saja dia masih berbisnis, sebenarnya anaknya bersama dengannya dan cucunya yang berusia dua puluh tiga tahun juga bersama dengan mereka dan mereka semua dalam bisnis. Kamu telepon dia dan aku yakin dia akan membuatkan sesuatu dalam kisaran harga yang kamu inginkan." Ketika saya kemudian memberi tahu ibu bahwa saya telah memesan jaket kepada nya, ini adalah jawaban dari ibu ku:

Kepada boneka tersayang,

Aku pikir anda melakukan hal yang benar dengan pergi ke Walowitz. Aku selalu senang dengan segala sesuatu yang pernah ia lakukan untuk ku. Tetapi katakan padanya dia harus memberikan biaya perjalanan anda menuju Brooklyn, dan juga jangan bayar pajak. Katakan padanya aku yang bilang begitu. Jelaskan pada Walowitz bahwa kamu menghabiskan $25 pada setiap perjalananmu menuju Brooklyn dan juga tolong beritahu ia bahwa kamu tidak akan dikenakan biaya untuk waktu yang diperlukan bagimu. Aku tidak bercanda. Dia harus melakukan sesuatu untuk anda, mengingat dia bahkan tidak memberikan hadian pernikahan!

Baru-baru ini, pada akhir kesimpulan kuliah saya tentang pentingnya sebuah humor, seorang pria Tiongkok yang baik datang kepada ku dan berkata, "Joyce aku ingin kau tau bahwa setelah mendengar tentang surat dari ibu mu, aku sekarang jadi tahu bahwa ada suatu kesamaan pada setiap ibu-ibu dan aku juga menyadari bahwa ibu ku juga pasti seorang Yahudi!"

 

Our Friendship Stories

I have 5 friends, they're not just like my other friends cause they are my best friends. Their names are Dela, Gema, Nadya, Amoy and Yusril. I will describe them one by one.

First is Dela, her full name is Dela Rahmiyati. But she never recognize her real full name. She always admit that her name is only Dela Rahmi and i still didn't know what's the reason !! She's bigger than me and the other, but still Yusril is the biggest among us. She is pretty like her mother (but i'm still more prettier than her). As long as i knew her, her hobby is eating. She always eating a lot, whenever and wherever the place. She's currently single, very cold to the opposite sex, but lately she's really want to have a boyfriend. She have a kind heart, and always treated me nice. She always there for me, and the most often accompany me  wherever i go.

Second, is Gema. Her full name is Gema Ayu Mardika. She usually called Gema or "Ndo" by her mother. She's thin, very thin and also tall. She's very chatty and have a loud voice. But she also good in singing, and the best among of all. She's the most complicated between all of us and the only one whose able to enter the tate university. She's currently studying in Jenderal Soedirman University. She's very clever and her logic is very good. She's confident and the most daring to talk and asked question to stranger ir people who just she meet.

Third is Nadya. Her full name is Nadya Larasati Twibowo. She's the smallest among us. She's very hyperactive and super super fashionable. She's always know the newest trend today. She's always failed to move on from her ex-boyfriends. She's very lazy to bathe and wake up early in the morning (quite similar to Dela). However, she have pretty face and sweet smile. The point is she's the most hyperactive and i can't describe her anymore more than this.

Fourth is Amoy. Her full name is Siti Rahmawati, she usually called Amoy (i don't know either where this came from). She's the most humane among all. She's very patient, kinf and always succumb to the other, she's the most straight among us. But ye she's slow and outdated. She's really plain, and rarely know anything. When she's so innocent and don't know something, she always said "Atuh gimana, amoy mah gak tau" (LOL).

The Last one is the most handsome Yusril Firmansyah. He's the most handsome because he's the only male among us. In fact he have very dark skin, slovenly, and live (imagine by yourself). He's the most generous among us and also our personal driver. Amazingly, he once chosen to Paskibraka as representative from our school in Bogor district.

The beginning i'm began close to them were when i was in grade two in high school. In fact, when i was in first grade, i'm rarely know and play with the. I was in the same major as Nadya, Yusril and Amoy, which is  Social majors. At that time Yusril was the new transfer student from different school. Meanwhile, Dela and Gema was in Science major. Although they are in different major with me and the other, it's not a reason to not getting close to them.

I often hang out together with them at Nadya's home. Nadya's home is our favorite place to gather. Every Saturday we always gather together in there. Sometimes just for watching horror movie, tell stories, or eat together until late at night. The most frequent activity we did was watching horror movie. I didn't know why we are very often watched it even though we are all very scared. But the most craven among us is Dela and Gema. It's not often we fell asleep during the movie together.

The more time we spent together, the more we became closer. But our friendship doesn't always go smoothly, there was one time when we had a conflict between us. For example, during our 3rd grade in high school Amoy and Yusril had fight to each other over something that the rest of us doesn’t really know. Amoy and Yusril began distant to each other and the result is we are all getting an awkward times where Yusril choose to spent his time alone, and only the five of us still hang out together, without Yusril. But it’s not too long, before they both became closer again and then we all playing together again, like usual.

Just like other teenager in our ages, we like to spent our time together, hang out, watching movies and sometimes studying together (althought we often chatting to much and forget to study). Time flies and suddenly we passed national exam final and busy thinking and planning about our future and which college we would enter. At that time, Gema is the only one whose already accepted to the state university of Jenderal Soedirman and rest of us is still uncertain which college we will enter.

Finally, our graduation day is come. We all attend the event solemnly and full of emotion. All of the students are looking good than usual, maybe because we all dressed up as good as possible, all the girls are using make up to look more beautiful. (But still, i'm the most beautiful throughtout the school.. Hahaha). Time flies really fast, it's been three years I’ve spent y high school life with them, and suddenly we have to split up in order to study in college.

I never forgot to captured every precious moment in our graduation day. Not just gradution day, but i'm also captured a lot of photos of us, knowing that someday we may separated to each other. Busy in enrolling to university and then leading a new daily activities as college student. I've decided to continue my education in Gunadarma University, but before i decided this decision, i've been sign up and accepted in State Polytechnic of Jakarta (but for your information, it's only for substitute) after days of hopes and pray, I’ve failed. It's not a good feeling, i feel sad because it's feel like they given me a false hope before rejected me.

And then we live our daily life as college student, we began distant to each other. Mostly because we are separated to different university. But i always try to spare my time to meet up with them. Time are running too fast because our first semester break time in college it's already in front of us. We already plans to go to vacation together. The first plan its to pick up Gema because her university is the farthest among of all (We live in Bogor and Depok area, but Gema are studying in Purwokerto city). This is the moment full of togetherness, although we didn't know exactly the way or how we pick her up, but still we all very excited. After that we all decided to go to The Jungle Land (Some sort of amusement park, i'm afraid with almost of all the rides games). We play together and also celebrate Amoy's birthday, we play all day long, until we get tired and exhausted, and after that they all stay overnight at my house (except Yusril, because he's the only boy). Although we already tired from the amusement park, we stay awake all night, chatting, and watching movie together until the sun rise.

One month later, Gema was already back to Purwokerto because the new semester will be start shortly. Finding a time to meet up its getting harder and harder, maybe because we all have our own business as a college student. We rarely hang out together whole of us, there's always one or two of us that couldn't come along. Long time ago we had promise to always spare our time to meet and play together. bu the pact is it's really hard to match our schedule that getting complicated each day. Sometimes when i'm alone, i'm thinking about them and how i really miss my high school days with them, because in the college, i think i would never find friends like them (they are so irreplaceble).

I miss times when we play together, watching movie together until midnight with our uniform. Time sure are flies really fast, we all are now entering the real world where we are growing into adult and soon will be a completed adult. I wish in the next semester holiday, we can have time together to meet and play together. and i hope we all can graduated from our college just in time. I wish we will be friends for eternity, and you all will always be my best friends and never change. I love you my best friends.

Tugas Softskill Bahasa Inggris 2 tentang Clause

CLAUSE

Clause adalah kelompok kata yang mengandung subjek dan predikat. Clause mungkin berupa kalimat yang dapat berdiri sendiri sebagai suatu kalimat atau independent clause, dan clause bisa berupa kalimat yang tidak dapat berdiri sendiri atau dependent clause.

Contoh clause :

·         I want some chocolate

·         He is at hospital

1.      Independent Clause

Independent clause adalah kalimat yang dapat berdiri sendiri. Tipe kalimat yang terdiri dari satu independent clause disebut simple sentence. Klausa ini dapat pula dikombinasikan dengan independent clause lainnya untuk membentuk compound sentence yang digabungkan oleh coordinate conjunction ( for, and, but, or, yet, so, dll. ) dan adverbial conjuction (however, rather, therefore, dll. )

Contoh Independent Clause

a.       Tipe kalimat yang terdiri dari satu independent clause ( simple sentence )

Ex : She prefer apple to mango

b.      Tipe kalimat yang dikombinasikan dengan independent clause lain ( compound entence)

Ex : She’s not ugly rather she’s very beautiful

2.      Dependent Clause

Dependent clause mengandung subject dan predicate  namun tidak dapat mengungkapkan suatu pikiran yang utuh karena klausa ini diawali oleh suatu kata (subordinator) yang menyebabkan makna dari klausa tersebut menggantung. Klausa ini harus dihubungkan (membentuk complex sentence) atau disatukan dengan independent clause  untuk menjadikannya “make sense” atau dapat dipahami maknanya sebagai kalimat yang utuh. Ada tiga dependent clause dasar, yaitu: noun clause, adjective clause, dan adverbial clause.

a.      Noun Clause

Noun Clause adalah dependent clause yang berfungsi sebagai noun ( kata benda ). Klausa kata benda ini dapat berfungsi sebagai subject maupun object di dalam suatu clause atau phrase lain. Karena berfungsi sebagai kata benda, maka dapat digantikan dengan pronoun“ it “.

Example :

·         Choose which one you like. I will buy it for you. [Pilih mana yang kamu sukai. aku akan membelikannya untukmu.]

·         Where does Putri live? I wonder if she lives in Bogor. [Dimana Putri tinggal? Aku penasaran apakah dia tinggal di Bogor.]

Rumus Noun Clause

Noun clause dapat diawali oleh noun clause markers berupa question word,  if  atau whether, dan that.

·         Question Word

Detail : what(ever), what (time, kind, day, etc), who(ever), whose, whom(ever), which(ever), where(ever), when(ever), how (long, far, many times, old, etc)

Example:

a)      Do you know when they arrive ?

b)      I think you whom Mr. Wahyu was looking for. (Saya kira kamu (orang) yang Mr.Wahyu sedang cari-cari tadi)

c)      I parked my car where you waited me yesterday

·         If atau Whether

Biasanya digunakan untuk kalimat jawaban dari pertanyaan yes-no question atau bentuk reported speech dari pertanyaan tersebut.

Example :

a)      Is Dyon sick ?  I don’t know if Dyon is sick

b)      Is Dyon sick ?  I don’t know whether Dyon is sick

c)      Do you know if the bus stops here ?

·         That

Biasanya that-clause untuk mental activity. Berikut daftar verb pada main clause yang biasanya diikuti that - clause : assume, believe, discover, dream, guess, hear, hope, know, learn, notice, predict, prove, realize, suppose, suspect, think

Example :

a)      I think that you are very beautiful.

b)      I hope you that can come to my birthday party.

c)      I don’t know who that boy is.

b.      Adjective Clause

Adjective clause atau relative clause adalah dependent clause yang berfungsi sebagai adjective dan menjelaskan noun atau pronoun pada main clause dari suatu complex sentence (kalimat yang terdiri dari independent clause dan satu atau lebih dependent clause).

Posisi adjective clause selalu mengikuti noun atau pronoun yang diterangkannya.

Didalam kalimat, noun atau pronoun itu berfungsi  sebagai  subject atau object.Adjective clause dimulai dengan suatu kata yang disebut relative pronoun (who, whom, that, which, whose, etc) yang berfungsi menjembatani hubungan dengan noun atau pronoun yang diterangkannya.

Example :

·         I met a man who is kind to everybody.

·         The man whom I met was friendly.

·         The man that lives next to me is friendly.

·         The books which I bought were expensive.

·         Bogor is a city where I was born.

·         I know a girl whose brother is a movie  star.

c.       Adverbial Clause

Adverbial clause adalahdependent clause yang berfungsi sebagaiadverb (kata keterangan) dan memberikan informasi tentang verb, adjective, atauadverb yang berada padaindependent clause dengan kapasitasnya menjawab pertanyaan: how, when, where, why, atau to what degree. 

Adverbial clause dimulai dengan suatu kata yang disebut subordinate conjunction (when, after, because, though, etc). Kata ini berguna untuk menjembatani hubungan dengan independent clause yang diterangkan. Gabungan klausa ini dengan independent clause dinamakan dengan complex sentence, yaitu kalimat yang terdiri dari independent dan satu atau lebih dependent clause.

Macam-macam adverbial clause antara lain: 

·         Adverbial clause of time (waktu)

Adverb Clause of Time adalah adverbial clause yang menyatakan waktu. Untuk menunjukkan adverb clause of time kita bisa menggunakan subordinating conjunctions, seperti: after, as long as, as soon as, before, since, until, when, whenever, while.

Example : Before I read a novel, I was read a history book.

·         Place (tempat)

Adverb Clause of Place adalah adverbial clause yang menyatakan tempat, dan dapat menggunakan subordinating conjunction: where, wherever, anywhere, everywhere.

Example : Dyon may go wherever he want.

·         Cause & Effect ( Sebab & Akibat )

Kita dapat menggunakan subordinating conjunction: because, as, since, so, in order that, now that, in as much as, how that.

Exanple : Dela doesn’t go to school because she is sick.

·         Condition ( Pengandaian )

Adverb Clause of Condition adalah adverbial clause yang menyatakan syarat, kita dapat menggunakan subordinating conjunctions: if, even if, only if, unless, whether or not, provided, in case, in the event.

Example : If I cooked rice, I would eat rice.

·         Contrast / Consession ( Pertentangan )

Adverb Clause of Contrast adalah adverbial clause yang menyatakan perbedaan atau pertentangan. kita dapat menggunakan subordinating conjunctions: altough, even, though, while, where as untuk menunjukkan adverb clause of contrast.

Example : Even though I don’t have much money, I will try to help her.

·         Manner ( Cara )

Adverb Clause of Manner adalah adverbial clause yang menyatakan cara.

Example : Do as I ask you to do.
